ink_splotch: (a happy ending i'll never have [us])
My real-life is something of a muddle. My father was in Leicester, Monday to Tuesday, and it was so nice to see him again, but now I miss him terribly, and I'm not going home until July; I was sent home from work yesterday after I had a minor collapse due to cramps, which did not exactly heighten my opinion of the day in general; and a couple of my housemates are in a mood with the rest of us, due to discussions of rooming arrangements next year. Not exactly the best start ever to a week, if I'm honest.

Apart from that, I have my last Critical Theory seminar on Friday, which means it'll be the last time I see my seminar tutor. Which makes me quite sad, since he's absolutely amazing (and so is CT, which is another reason for sadness.)

On the other hand, I have finished my Satire and Sense essay, and only need to edit (and possibly create a conclusion for) my Critical Theory essay, which is a very good thing; Gemma's been taking care of me, which has been, well, wonderful (I'm...kind of bad at dealing with people taking care of me - I feel obliged to help. However, Gemma got rather strict with me, so. Yes.); I'm beginning to think I may just be able to scrape by my exams. Also I've been reading Stephen Jay Gould's Life's Grandeur, which is amazing and beautiful and kind of makes me wish I were more of a scientist. Or smart enough to be able to use his theories in some way for my academic work (which remind me, I really, really need to start thinking seriously about my dissertation. And possibly considering re-reading Anansi Boys.)

Quite apart from everything else, I've got a craving for World Without End fic. Which disappointingly still doesn't exist. The book's been out for six months, people!Spoilers! )

Speaking of things related to the fandom life: Beat It. I love Patrick. Like, a lot. (His voice, you guys!)

Also, DADT, Damyata, Dayadhvam messed with me. I can't believe how short it is for something that packs such a powerful punch. It's an SG:A alternate universe, where Don't-Ask-Don't-Tell isn't just a law - it's a chip, implanted into everyone affiliated with the US military. It gets to me on a number of levels and some of them make me a little uncomfortable, but I recommend it whole-heartedly. It is amazing.

Hey MC,
Hope your trip was okay and you've arrived safe and sound. There should be food in the fridge and clean sheets on the bed.
See you tomorrow,
Dad

Hey MC,
Hope you've brought candy! Please empty the dishwasher, I forgot.
Mikkel
P.S. CREME EGGS, BITCH!

Ah, home-sweet-home.

(On a vaguely related note: how awesome is it to be able to wake slowly, going from a dream state to writing fic mentally in the snooze period on the alarm? mmm, sleep!)

So.

I'm back! *cancans* China was hot, stuffy and awesome - I was particularly fond of Shanghai, though it's way too big (22 million people is not a city, it's a frickin' country.); compared to Beijing it's incredibly open and fun to wander around. Beijing is kind of sterile and far, far too touristy for my taste and also has really creepy government buildings (I mean that the buildings are creepy. The government dealings which go on inside the buildings might be creepy. And speaking of creepy: 1984 is now one of my favourite books and The Assualt on Reason is brilliant. Al Gore = such a geek). Shanghai also has a a street which is called The City of Book: a gorgeous, lovely street which includes a seven-storey Foreign Language Bookstore where I bought 9 books for just under 200 kr. YAY!

But the real place of awesome was Yangzhou, a scenic little backpacking town buried among mountains - we took a river boat to get there from Guilin, which is the biggest city near by. So fabulous, with lots of really cheap bars where I could sit and have a drink and read or write and just *relax* - something that was distinctly lacking in Beijing and Shanghai.

Anyway, for those interested, I have photos up here.

(is it obvious I'd run out of photos by the time we hit Shanghai?)

Meanwhile, I am now back! And have spent most of today raiding the internet for Band of Brothers fic (I went two weeks without, I think I'm entitled to a day of getting back in touch with my inner slasher) and feeling a little bit ill - post-trip exhaustion is a joy for all. But the Band of Brothers fic is helping. A lot. I may even crack out a rec post, though it probably won't be necessary since - praise the slash-gods - for once my timing is *perfect* and August on the [livejournal.com profile] crack_van sees BOB as a small fandom. Again. YAY, 12 more recs with any luck.

man, August is going to be good. First Sofie in two days (SOFIE!) and then Gemma in 11 days (I HAVEN'T SEEN HER FOR OVER A MONTH. HELP. Seriously. Why does it keep getting worse?) and then, on the 31st, I move into my house. Seriously, guys. I'm pretty damn gleeful about August.

It's good to be back!

Hello All!

Apart from a rather worrying sore throat and an overwhelming urge to kill Mel Gibson [the urge is always there, it's just overwhelming right now], I am in an excellent mood.

There's good fandom news, good general news and good family news. Well, maybe not so much news.

My grandmother is staying with us this days, which is rather agreeable. We had a long talk yesterday, spurred by sixty minutes, about sex, sexuality and why, for God's sake, some mothers are insane. Also about how religion sort-of-sucks. Particularly in regard to Mel Gibson. Who is an ass. Though the Daily Show comment was good. I digress.

I am constantly reminded that my family is both very weird, and very liberal. My grandmother and I talked about how teaching absitnence is hugely dangerous, how it warps young peoples minds with regards to sex, themselves and themselves in relation to others, and also how my grandmother thinks that women who give up sex after menopause are insane.

Yes, I talk about sex with my grandmother. I know.

We also discussed how people who refuse to vaccinate their kids are ridiculous. And that not supporting stem cell research is equally ridiculous. Which is how we got on the subject of Mr. Gibson and his ridiculous "I was once those twelve cells!" statement. My grandmother said that he was a ridculous religious relic. Which had me in a fit. You should have heard her voice.

Went shopping today and am now the proud owner of a pair of new shoes. Hurrah! Met an old classmate of Tessie's in the store, spoke to her about school, very amusing. Also, went hunting for a rainbow bracelet, without much sucess, but I shall not be deterred!

Am making a Christmas List, and am positively disturbed about how hard it is so come up with idea. Ergh. However, have more-or-less decided on everything I want to give to my family. Go me. Now, all I need is the money. I sense a complication.

Still have no ideas for Tina, though. *pokes you* Also, Senni, Dee, Emmi, would you like cards? Small gift? fic? I am open, though not on a huge budget. Sorry.

Am contemplating sending powerpoint show of how to use Amazon with wishlist. A bit forward and tacky, perhaps? Hm. Possibly.

Today was Andreas' birthday. [My little brother, not the one from my class, because as it has been said, he's a bit of an ass] Got him 'Life of Brian' because one can never go wrong with Python. Am going with family, minus father, to Hard Rock for dinner later. Will undoubtably be good fun. Father is instead going to a party, as two of his friends are turning fifty. My father took that as an opportunity to angst over his own age. For ten minutes, until I reminded him that Billy Joel is fifty-four and married to a twenty-nine year old. This cheered him up enough to make inappropriate comments about the Springsteen concert, and whether or not Bruce Springsteen would be good in bed.

Went to the Study Abroad bazaar thing today. picked up information about Leciester University along with Newcastle-on-tyne, both which look excellent. Both which require a grade point average of 10. Yay. That's so very likely. Ah, well. Also picked up info about a community college in New Jersey which offers Women Studies and Communications. Hm.

As for fandom, all I can say is Hee! Stephen Fry. *snuggles* Watching TV2 Charlie, which is awesome no matter what anyone else says, and they showed 'Jeeves and Wooster'. Hee! I think I'm a little bit in love. And of course, I'm a little bit infatuated with the idea of Jeeves/Wooster slash. Yay! For new pairings. Also yay! for the slash database project.

Alright, I'm off to do someting vaguely...something-ish. Yes.

Just your average dinner table conversation )

Meta about Jewish last names )

Went to see 'Stepford Wives'. Twas teh awesomness. And Nic was looking absolutely lovely and classy as always. I think I beginning to catch Julies crush on her.

Also, I want to know the terms of Matthew Brodericks deal with the Devil. Jesus. The man still looks like Ferris.

Am going to a friends summerhouse tomorrow. 0.o That'll be fun. Also, at this point, I've been so social during these hols, I need to go into hermit like conditions when I get home. Eep.
