Today was, in fact, a rather productive day. Went biking for the first time in a month (a month! That's insane!) and it was amazing. Seriously, I never realize how much I've missed it until my feet are on the peddles, iPod in my ears and just
going. I suppose it's akin to how some people feel in cars, when you hit the freeway and it's just smooth. It's a good feeling.
So, biked into my dad's work, had conference call with UCAS, because I am considering going to another university and so I may have to go through clearing. Talked to this sweet guy, Rob, about it and he was very comforting. And then I had to start calling up universities.
First two I called, Manchester and Leeds, were quite snooty about how they had absolutely no places, as if I was stupid to even call. Then King's and Southhampton got in my face about how clearing didn't start until the 17th of August, and I could call back then. Then Leicester said I should try emailing the departments. Hey! Brilliant, plus I was cramping like mad, so talking on the phone was annoying. Emailed King's, Leicester, Reading and Southhampton, and got this email back:
Dear [vampirespider],
We should be happy to consider you for a place to read Combined Honours English and History. As things look at the moment, we may well have some places unfilled when Clearing starts. Please do send me your grades.
Best wishes,
John Peacock
Admissions Tutor for Combined Honours, English, School of HumanitiesWhich sounds good - right? Right?
Yeah. I think things might just work out.
Also -
Wilby Wonderful's really getting under my skin. I want to write fic, which is silly 'cause I haven't written in ages, and I need to write the Ray-talks-to-Death fic that's been in my head for ages. But Wilby is just so gleefully sweet, and slow, and awkward, and it just really gets under my skin, in a really, really good way. And now I want to watch it again; hasn't arrived yet, which is annoying, because I need to see it again.
( In which I babble more [spoilers] )Wilby Wonderful has quite a bit of fanfiction as well, most of it linked
here. Most of the fiction is excellent, and (happily!) mostly focused on Duck, and Duck/Dan.
Backwards by
merelyn is a wonderful study of Dan leading up to the movie; it takes a look at his relationship with Val, introduces Duck, and gives such a wonderful image of the temptation Dan faces, both from Duck and the Watch.
Odd Man Out by Dira is a sweet story, set after Duck rescues Emily. It's a slow fic, where they talk about what it's like to be an islander, what it means to be family and what it means to be an outsider.
Eight Days by
torakowalski. I love, love, love this fic. Dan learning to be alive and with Duck. It has lovely interactions with most of the characters. It's so well written. And on top of that? It's really, really hot.
A Coffee Triptych by
serialkarma. The evolution of Wilby post-movie, it involves all the characters and it's just gorgeous - it describes how all the characters' second chances come through, in this quiet, beautiful way.
And now I'm going to go watch
the L-Word. How much does it figure that when CKR gets a role in a series I actually watch, he's a bad guy? *pouts*
ETA: Oh, and guess what? Denmark is suffering from a decided lack in sailors and fishermen. Guarenteed employment - so there it is: my plan if this university thing falls through. *hums
