a feeling he was trying to put a name to

I'm not sure if y'all already know this, but
cesperenza has PodFic. Including MVP which fills me with a warm squishy feeling because it is my second favourite thing in the SGA fandom (two episodes of the show, but damn I love the fandom!)
However, that's just a side note. Really, I am here to rec: There Must Be a Word by
garnettrees. Band of Brothers, Winters/Nixon, PG-13 (images of war, mostly). The short version of my reccomendation goes: Winters tries to find a word to describe what's going on between Nix and him.
garnettrees writes beautifully and the story flows really, really well, images following almost inevitably after each other.
It's not coincidence that this story is in Band of Brothers, of course, but it is still something I have been looking for for a long, long time. Way back in Newsies fandom, there was a thread on The Refuge where we discussed sexuality in Newsies fic; namely, what would the Newsies call same sex attraction? And how do you deal with it if there are no words? I tried to give my own answer with Having to Know to Understand, but that story was about a lot of things, and I think I missed the mark. But in There Must Be a Word, I found some kind of answer.
The thing is that, for all that what we today identify as homosexuals had been identifying as homosexual and creating a subculture from just about the 1500s and forward (probably before that, but my Early Modern history book identifies the Renaissance period as an important shift period, where homosexual relationships became more common between equals, rather than between a man/boy or a noble/servant, and there was a greater sense of identification with a subculture. Still the beginnings of what was well-established by the 19th century, but there), for most people up until the 1960s/70s, queer, gay, fag would all be something negative and, for the most part, identified with the sexual component of it. Being homosexual before then was seen as having very little to do with love. And so it is entirely possible that someone as young as Winters (22 when they set off for D-day, I think?) wouldn't think of it that way. And then what do you do? What do you call that feeling? If it can't be love, not romantic love, because that's associated with women, and can't be queer, because that's associated with sex, what is it?
Beyond all that, though, it's such a good story and this line: No words, no words for this feeling, in any language he's searched yet. There has to be one, though-- a word-- because humans label everything. is everything I've ever wanted to say about love.
If you couldn't be bothered to read the long (rather blathering) bit, the basic encapsulation goes: this story is better than porn. It makes me FLAIL, people.

You deserve all that and more; this story is probably the story that's given me most glee of any story in any fandom. I love it to bits and I stand in absolute awe of your writing skills. You evoke such images with so few words; I can *see* Nix and Dick, I can hear their voices - and it's an introspective fic, yet I can see them move. Your writing amazes me - has since M*A*S*H - and this fic is just...I can't even describe how much I adore it.
I'm going to stop being a crazy fangirl now. Erhm.
