I don't own emotion, I rent!

Mark Cohen is my new best friend. And What You Own is still awesome. And I still wouldn't stay alive to hear Roger sing Your Eyes - the boy may be cute, but the song just sucks.
So! Went to see RENT. Came out a Renthead. Ain't that always the way?
Okay, I can see why critics weren't exactly loving it. Undoubtedly it works better as a play, and quite a lot of the scene changes inspired quite a deal of "quoi?" among the audience. However, as I heard three people sobbing by the time Angel was in the hospital, the film is not, in my opinion, the failure most critics pegged it as.
And if you're guessing that I was one of the three crying? You're wrong. I didn't start sniffling until Mark's speech at the funeral. of course, I sniffled at both life support meetings, so i still suck
So, back to the film. I love, love, love the opening. Well, after the intial silence of the titles, whch led to much whispering in the theatre (which was *tiny*, but packed, a good sign, right?), but the opening with the cast singing Seasons of Love, oh! So excellent. I would've bought the ticket for just that, because it made me shiver. Hee! And then the little square, with the narrating? Liked very much.
Which brings me to what *made* the movie for me:
Mark.
No, seriously. I *love* Mark. Not only is the character sweet and likable and everybody's best friend, but just Anthony Rapp's *expressions*. They owned every scene, like in Will I?, when Roger enters and Mark has this look like he's going to cry and he's trying not to, but at the same time he's trying not to break out into a smile and run over and hug Roger and scare him off and ruin the film, that was what almost made me cry. And his proud expression in La Vie Boheme, his heartbroken face in Reprise, and, of course, What You Own. Oh Mark. And of course, it helps that he's the character I identify with the most - the dweeb, the geek, the quiet one and the one to be left behind. And have I mentioned that I want Mark to be my best friend?
Oh, and because everything above sounds very serious - how *awesome* was Mark in both Tango and Take me...? HIS FACE!
Which naturally leads me to Joanne. And Maureen. And I was all prepared to dislike this pairing too, because of my dislike of Maureen, but wow, let me take that back. Joanne was, of course, every bit as amazingly cool and dykey as I wanted and expected, but Maureen was a lot more sympathetic and likable than previously considered. And they just *worked*, in all the little (flirty) ways. Take Me... was fun and sodamnsexy. Shut up, it was. And after Goodbye Love? Damn. Just. Those are my girls and they deserve a happy ending, and they deserve each other. Yeah.
Also, I want Mark & Joanne fic. Not shippy, but friendshippy, them talking. Because they rocked together, particularly in Tango: Maureen. Gotta love the sniping!
Speaking of things I didn' expect to like, Roger. Yes, Roger. He always struck, both on the CD and in fanfic as being an unbearably brooding and passive. And yet, in the movie, he won me over, partly, I think, because of Mark and Mark's obvious concern for him. D'aww. But I'll admit, it also had to do with Adams performance, and the fact that he's just *likable*, damn him. And with Mimi (who was hot and sweet and saucy, but perfect) he was even more so. Yeah, sometimes the scenes between Mimi and Roger came off a little awkward (the ending of Another Day, anyone?), they still worked, I still rooted for them.
But had I hated him all through the movie, I still would've caved during What You Own, when he's standing on the roof, unsure of whether or not to approach Mark and then they just *sing* at each other. So damn sweet and flawed and hurting and good.
Also, Rosario dancing was just. GAH! Wanted to lick her, dammit.
Then, of course, there was Angel/Collins. HEE! So much fun. I would've liked to see more of their relationship, but just the small glances at the life support meeting made me squee. And during Wihtout You, they just plain broke my heart. Seriously. I'll Cover You was fun and sweet and *I* want to go dancing on the street. Still, a little build-up would've been nice - the scene where they met kinda let me down, there wasn't the spark I had expected. But so cute! And Today For You was fabulous, with the highkicks, and the flirting and Collins being oh-so-proud. *loves on*
And then Reprise. Oh, Collins. Oh Angel. And Collins during Finale B? When Mimi tells him that Angel's looking good? Oh, boy, I just wanted to hug him. Poor darling.
And Finale B was *good*. A lovely ending, well pulled off, and Collins pulling Mark into the hug was such a lovely touch, underscoring that, for all the romance, it's still all about friendship.
Because I have to mention it: La Vie Boheme! OMG! ♥ Fucking amazing! Just - go, go see it. Now.
So, bottom line: Some of the cuts were annoying, the fades could've been better, certain things work better on stage (Rent, the song, for example), Mark is my new best friend, What You Own is awesome despite shampoo elements, dammit, Joanne/Maureen & Angel/Collins OTP and Roger is a woobie. GO SEE!
And, as a prize for putting up with my whining & squeeing:

Date: 2006-03-12 03:13 am (UTC)My favourite parts are pretty much ANYTHING with Collins. I absolutely LOVE him. I'm not even kidding.
There's an alternate ending on the DVD, where instead of just showing Mark's movie at the end, they cut to the cast standing on the apron of the stage, and Angel walks back out and goes to his spotlight and I went ARGH!
And I swear I'll Cover You reprise made my brother cry. He'd never own it, but he was snifflin'.

Date: 2006-03-12 07:23 pm (UTC)I NEED THE DVD ZOMG. Sadly, I have no money. I'll just have to make do with the bootleg until the end of the month. *pouts* I wanna see the alternate ending so bad.
And hee, sounds like something my dad would do.

Date: 2006-03-12 07:16 pm (UTC)Wait until you get the DVD.. the alternative ending with Finale B, is, again, in my opinion, MUCH better than the one they showed on screen. It left me jumping out of my seat, shouting at the screen (almost put jumping out of my screen, shouting at the seat.. I think I still need some more sleep) "WHY DIDN'T THEY PICK THIS ONE?!" Regardless, Finale B is so lovable and aww. ♥
There's quite a few deleted scenes that I feel they should have put into the movie to make more sense (i.e. Mark and Roger's fight would explain why Roger skedaddled alot quicker and more decisively) but bahhh I'll stop now. Yes. Great movie. A+++ would view again.

burn the past to the ground
Date: 2006-03-12 07:29 pm (UTC)I WANT THE DVD NOW DAMMIT. RIGHT NOW. But I'm poor. Sigh. The alt. ending is the one where Collins and Angel do their little handholding thing, right? D'aw.
I really wanted to see the second half of Goodbye Love. And Hallowe'en (crush on Mark? Me?) Though, more than anything, I just wanted more.
Re: burn the past to the ground
Date: 2006-03-12 07:33 pm (UTC)Yeah. It's really worth it. Even the silliest things that didn't deserve to get cut out at all got cut! Like there's an extra where Angel goes "my cat had a fall and I went through hell!" and Benny goes "..how did you know that she fell?" (like in New Years, obviously) and Angel has this priceless expression on his face and then him and Collins burst into laughter after Benny leaves. XDDD It wasn't even that long of a scene and they cut it out! Why?! It would've made the movie better jgsklsjlgj ;_;
Do tell if you're interested, though. ;D
