I don't know if you read crack_van, but they had a whole slew of recommendations of fic about the Susan problem, which I found intriguing. You're right - it is reductionist, and I felt betrayed, even as a child, that someone could sacrifice a character so easily for a moral point, because I loved the Pevensies and the thought of one of them not getting in broke my heart.
